Audience research (age/gender)

This is a Psychological Thriller as it is between two characters battling against each other's minds, though the mental state. This means it can be aimed for older people as Psychological Thrillers are more mentally challenging.

Should be aimed for females as they may feel more emotion and empathy for the girl due to motherly connections to the girls in the film. And also because generally, if the main character is a girl then a film will tend to be aimed to girls. Also there is research to show that females are more interested in psychological thrillers as they generally have more empathy and boys.

15 rated rather than 18 rated audience certificate means there will be a wider audience, meaning more people can go. Therefore a higher profit will be mad. This means it  must fit the 15+ guidelines.

According to the BBFC...

15 rated: No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. 15 rated works are not suitable for children

Limits - No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

Portrayal of gender

The Young Girl

We have collectively decided to name the girl starring in the opening Lily, this is due to the femininity and delicacy of the name. It is a very english name which also means a type of flower. It is thought to represent purity and beauty. This means that the audience will automatically warm up to the name and not feel threatened. Although in the beginning she is trapped by a man it is important that we show her intelligence and bravery which will automatically go against stereotypes of a dominating men as she outsmarts him.

Older Man

We want to call this character of the older man Mark. Mark is a very masculine name originating from both England and Russia. It is a very ordinary and normal name which does not attract much attention. This represents the man in all and his personality.

Thriller Definition

  •             Exciting plot

  •             Thriller films that primly use action and suspense to engage the audience

  •              Emphasis nervous tension and anxiety
  •              Distinct from horror and movie movies – but links to them (has fear and exhilaration too)

  •              They often evolve topic such as – crime, disaster movie, action adventure, dangerous and creating suspense

  •              Often has elements of other genres – hybrid genre

  •           Suspense is the main theme – can’t show everything in order to create suspense

  •       Hitchcock ---- likes how thrillers put ‘the common man into the protagonist position’
  •       Action movies are too unrealistic and skilled - thrillers have more common protagonists

Now You See Me

  • dark scene but part of mans face and cards are illuminated - draws our attention to the important part - also makes the magician seem mysterious
  • He looks right at the camera - engages the audience and makes the scene very intense
  • he also has a long fringe which stops just above his eyes - adds to the mystery as it covers a lot of his face
  • we have an open shot to give a sense of there being an endless crowd of people watching
  • the cards are all too blurry to read properly accept for one card - this means the viewer and the people in the film all see the same card
  • it is a point-of-view shot when he performs the trick - this engages the viewer and makes us want to try out the trick
  • we then see a shot that pans up to look at the building - makes the building look powerful at the trick feels more amazing and exciting
  • the next scene is in a very different location and with different people - this engages us and stops the viewers from getting bored of the same set up - it also gives us a feeling of there being a lot of people in the trade
  • we have no introduction to the characters - we just go straight to the script which gives no background
  • high speed editing when trying to find out about the woman - makes the viewers feel tense and gripped
  • we zoom in on different areas to see different ways he could react
  • when the man takes the money from the client it is down very quickly and low down - makes it seem a shifty trade
  • in the boat scene the magician has harsh shadows on his eyes so they look black - makes him seem more shifty
  • highly saturated colours makes a more trustworthy feel - misleading
  • we get very close when he bends the spoon - focus all the viewers attention on the trick - more tense
  • very high speed editing to show how quickly the magician takes from the other man
  • seamless editing as man run down stairs then the next shot is the women running up different stairs - gives a more satisfying high speed affect - gives a feeling of the craft of magic an tricks being very smooth and easy
  • we keep being reminded of the timer - makes the whole thing stay feeling tense
  • a few quick shots of the piranhas above her to keep reminding her of what she is up against
  • we are tricked into feeling the woman will make it before the piranhas are dropped on her but she just doesn't make it - gives a false sense of relief
  • lots of folly sound affects - adds to the tension of the scene
  • lots of scene that are filmed inside the tank - makes the viewer more engaged as the viewer feel the are also trapped in the tank

The Disappearance of Alice Creed

The Disappearance of Alice Creed

close up shots give no show of space around them, makes her seem trapped
she is often quite central and  lit up and she is focused and he is very unfocused so the viewer focuses on her lots more
unflattering lighting shows her to be in a bad state

camera focuses on her gazing at gun and camera follows her vision and focuses on the gun, this lets the viewer follow her thought process and relate to her and feel more as if were there and it effects us

Kidulthood

kidulthood

camera pans side to side, feels like the people are being watched by a person
someone talks then the camera pans to the side and another conversation is overheard, makes the school ground seem very busy and theres always a lot going on
lots of people in every shot in the background, makes it seem more busy
quickly introduces the characters to the film
lots of depth of field to draw in the eye

pull focus- move from different parts in focus
