Filming day - 1

Yesterday we began filming all the scenes which are based inside and right out side the house, which is the main location for our opening. Issy Wood forgot to bring the story board to the Evie's house, which is where we filmed. Luckily we all are pretty familiar with our story board and could remember all the shots we needed. Therefore it was still very helpful that we had made the storyboard. We worked with all natural lighting in our shots. However this was troublesome as we started filming at around 1 pm and we had to stop filming at about 4 pm because it started to get too dark for successful lighting. This means that we have to do the rest of the house shots at a later date. We managed to get all the shots that we need our actor, Conor, in. However there are some shots that we need the man in but we can use another actor to take his place as they are shots were he is very hidden. We purposely left these shots to the end, just incase the actor had to leave before we were finished. However we didn't have a car available to film the car pulling in.

Film Script

OUR FILM BEGINS IN MEDIA RES, WE DO THIS TO IMMEDIATELY CAPTURE THE AUDIENCES ATTENTION AND START ASKING QUESTIONS.
TO ACCOMPLISH THIS THERE NEEDS TO BE A SOUND BRIDGE STARTING A COUPLE OF SECONDS BEFORE THE VISUAL FILMING IS DISPLAYED.
THE FIRST TEN SECONDS OF THE SCENE WILL BE IN A FOREST.
IT CUTS FROM THE BLACK TO A SHOT OF THE GIRL RUNNING PAST THE CAMERA AS IT IS A CLOSEUP SHOT OF HER FEET.
IT TRACKS AND FOLLOWS HER FROM BEHIND TREES.
YOU HEAR PANTING AND HER FOOTSTEPS.
(THIS SCENE IS MADE TO BE VERY INTENSE AND FAST PACE)
IT MAKES A SUDDEN CUT TO A STILL, SILENT ROOM WITH THE SAME GIRL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FRAME USING AN OPEN SHOT MAKING HER LOOK SMALL AND WEAK.
THE CAMERA IS STILL HAND HELD AND PANS AROUND THE ROOM SHOWING THE GIRLS ROOM, IT CUTS TO CLOSE UPS OF THE TOYS PLACED ON THE BED. IN THE BACKGROUND YOU CAN SLIGHTLY HEAR THE NOISE OF THE FRONT DOOR OPENING.
USING CROSSCUTTING IT SHOWS THE MAN CLOSING THE DOOR AFTER HIMSELF.
IT CUTS BACK TO THE GIRL WITH THE OVERLAPPING SOUND OF THE DOOR SHUTTING AS THE TURNS HER HEAD.
HE WALKS THROUGH TO THE KITCHEN AND OPENS THE FRIDGE DOOR.
PORTRAYING HIMSELF TO BE DOMESTICATED AS HE MAKES HIS DINNER.

Idents

An ident is a image that a television channel or film production company uses to identify its self. It is made up of text of the name of the company. It is usually and animation or another form of moving image. It is usually shown before a film starts. They can be of a movie studio or production company

Examples of film production company indents:

It is important that an indent has very clear to read text. There is often a lot of movement, making a more exciting logo. There should be an iterating movement in the animation of the ident. For example, the stars circling in the Paramount ident and the female lifts up her torch, referencing the Statue of Liberty in the Columbia ident. They often have a very epic to them, for example, lions, show lights, mountains. They last from bout 15-25 seconds long each.

However we want a more modern and sleek feeling to ours. Rather than the more traditional ones such as '20th century fox' and 'columbia'. We like the sleeker look of 'Metro Goldwyn Mayer'. It looks good with the black background contrasting with the gold logo. We can put a lot of effort in this ident by putting in sound effects, music and animation. We want to make sure ours isn't to long that it will get boring for the audience. We could have loud, dramatic and kind of epic music to make it more exciting. Or we could have a sleeker feel by having it simpler and just have sound effects in time with text. This would make a very short ident.

Often independent production companies, often have slightly more themed indents. This is because these companies specialise in making certain types of films, e.g. thrillers. The independent production company, Gunslinger make social realism films. This is their ident;

As our film is dark psychological thriller and we want out ident to set the theme of the film. As idents are played at the very beginning of the film, they do have the power to set the film. This means that we don't want a ident that gives a very happy and relax feel. Darker colours and red will work to our advantage.

Style and Tone

As our film is a physiological thriller, this means we want it to feel very realistic.  This is why we have chosen to do it in an everyday house, with no overdramatic unrealistic props.  We don't want the horror thrill side to the film to be exaggerated either, for example by using over dramatic sound or by the way we dress the kidnapper, just so it doesn't make the style seem cheesy and cliche.  We want the clip to have a social realist genre, and emulate a realistic tone, making it more creepy, as from films we have seen in the past, the scariest are when it seems as if it can happen to you.

We took inspiration from films like Lovely Bones, which we have referenced also in the costume ideas, The Call, and also Prisoners.  These films all have a similar kidnapping scene in common which seems realistic as ones on a field, one in a carpark, and one on a street.  So we thought we would reference these films and see what tones they emulate as they carry the tone we want.

(picture above from the kidnapping scene of The Call)

The Disappearance of Alice Creed is also a kidnapping film which emulates the style we want.  In the poster for it i thought it showed the tone of the film well.  The colour palette of the film is also useful to us as the pale greyish colours give a sense of gloom that would be useful to use and gives the film a general mood to it.    It also has a all British cast, which gives it the urban feel we want so we think this will be  useful film to refer to.

Location: Woods

In the beginning of the opening we are planning to have a fast pace scene set in the woods, this occurs in many films which creates a fast pace, thrilling start to a scene. The scene should be set in the dark making it seem like it is very late creating a mystery as some shapes and figures are not fully seen by the audience. Due to this being set in December and January the sun goes down at around five which is very help as we can shoot it as soon as it gets dark. These next screenshots are ones from films and give off the same camera shots and feeling that we are aiming for:

The woods where we want to shoot are in Dulwich park, it is a public park making it easy to shoot in and has various different clusters of trees around it. Here are some images of it in the day time:

EB

Location: Downstairs of the house

Following the modern theme of the bedroom we are thinking of using a 'regular' modern day house creating a normality to the scene. The whole idea to the opening of this film is to make the audience feel like it could be based on a true story or that it is a plausible tale. This also makes it a lot easier for us to film as we can use one of our own houses as we film the man downstairs completing domestic chores and watching television.

This setting would be the most ideal place to shoot in although I am still debating whether it would look very out of place in the scene due to it being very graphic. There is also a lot of contrast from light to dark in areas.

EB

Location: Girls Room

Due to the idea of the opening that we want to create, I am picturing the teenage girl in a very modern stereotypical, young, childish style room. Making the room resemble a child's room of today makes the rest of what is going to happen a lot more realistic and therefore more thrilling. The photos above is my interpretation of a young girls room of around 12 years old. The idea of having an older girl aged around 17 placed in a room which resembles a young girl will immediately look out of place and suspicious. This is the type of effect that I am trying to portray. It should slightly unsettle the audience and create questions. A lot of the bedrooms I looked at it is mainly pink with toys and posters on the walls.
As we do not have access to this style of room we are discussing if we could transform a bedroom temporarily to accomplish this look. This would include posters being stuck on the walls, pink accessories, a diary, and different subtle additions to the room. This means that we can have an establishing shot as the camera pans around the children room creating an eery environment. This effect is fairly easy to establish due to the audience taking in other horror and thriller films shooting in a child's bedrooms, this means that they will automatically anticipate something to happen. The following shots are from different films using similar ideas:
This first screenshot is from a horror film called 'Women in black' and is taken in a young girls room just before they are made to commit suicide. Although the set does not resemble the bedrooms above, it shows similar ideas but is set much earlier in time.
This is from a film called 'Ouija', again it is a fairly scary film which is about a young girl reaching out to spirits, a lot of the beginning of the movie is set in her bedroom where she first finds the board etc. The room is of an older girl but still gives off a very innocent characteristic which contrasts to the film making it eery.
This is a young girls room which stars in 'Annabelle' which is a horror film, this room is made to resemble a nursery room and is where the doll, and main features of the film are located.

I have only given three examples but this idea of using a child's room to create a sinister ambience due the fact that it is meant to be a safe and innocent room as it is where your child is at its most vulnerable state. Using this knowledge which the audience have prior to watching the opening of this film it means that we are able to suggest that something is wrong without spelling it out leaving a slight mystery to the scene.

Costume: Man

The other character in the film ,apart from the girl will be a man in his mid 40's.  Going along with the idea in the film, of him seeming a normal level headed man, who seems to have lost his child, we don't want his outfit to be creepy, or smart.  We want it to be really casual, and subtly mimicking what builders wear to give a 'geezer' effect, making him seem ordinary.  We took inspiration from the film Shifty as the men had a manly urban look.  Also this fitted with the characters they played in the film, so as the costume worked with their general look, we thought we should use them as inspiration.

Also in Collateral, the character Jamie Foxx plays gives an 'ordinary guy' feel, and we thought he would be good inspiration as we don't want the man to look like a kidnapper.   Also in Jamie Foxx's character, he wears glasses and through his actions, he seems to have a slight edge, making him be more than just an ordinary man.  We want to think about this when choosing props and when filming, as we don't want only the costume to portray the character of the man and his purpose in the scene.
This is a mood board of what we want him to wear, making it easier for us to picture the character.  We wanted him to wear simple clothes, as if he is about to start a normal day.  We think this will be a thrilling contrast to the girl cowering in the other room.  It also builds the thrill as he seems so ordinary but is capable of kidnapping, and creates the idea that your neighbour could be a kidnapper as he seems so normal.  At first we though of tracksuits and baggy tops, but going with the 'dad' theme we also added shirts, jackets and jeans, to make him seem older, adding to the creepiness.  The cigarettes will give the scene an urban gritty feel and again will add to his ordinary perception.

IW

Costume: Girl

The main girl who has been kidnapped, needs to clearly portray her emotion, and this can be shown through her dress.  As she is probably going to be in her early teen (14+) then we want her clothes to be stereotypical of that age group and gender.
When thinking of inspiration the main girl form the film ‘Lovely Bones’ inspired us as she gives off an innocent feel, and as her character as a whole seems to work with the plot of her getting kidnapped, we thought she would be good inspiration.

This is a mood board of the types of things the girl should wear.   Aswell as looking at the girl from Lovely Bones, we took inspiration from what teenagers commonly wear, but also referring to our interpretation of the sterotype of a teenage girl.  To make the scene look more creepy, and to exaggerate her youth, we were thinking of making her clothes more similar to what a 5 year old girl would wear(pale pink, dungarees, kids brand logos)

The mood board was quite easy to create as we based it off our own clothes when we were younger and also from the clothes we see young children wearing, nowadays.  The jewellery and frilly socks give off an innocent feel that would suit the girls character.  I tried to get accesroies that little girls would want, from what I've seen in shops aimed at this age group like 'Claires'.

Our other idea was that the girl has been dressed by her kidnapper in his scruffy baggy clothes.  This would add to her vulnerable look and make her seem more exposed.  It was also make the connection between the man and the girl more obvious.  Again, this is slightly exaggerated as we really wanted to portray the manly look.
Our main inspiration for manly clothes came from what characters in tv shows such as 'Eastenders' and 'coronation STreet' and what the builders tend to wear.  We also based it off what our dads wear as the man in our film is going to be around the same age as our dads.  They are quite baggy clothes and details like the socks being mens which add to the first impression of the girls state, which is very important.

  • Child: Could be a literal child or just living like one. Ex: Wally McDoogle, Peter Pan
  • Innocent: someone who is inexperienced and exposed to evil. Ex: Dorothy Gale
  • Slave: Does not belong to himself. Ex: Dobby the house elf
  • Survivor: Pulls through no matter what happens, doesn’t give up

Actors with suitable appearance to play the main girl character.

These are just a few actresses we have seen in films, that when thinking about how we want the main girl to look, tied in with these characters.

Amanda Seyfried – her blonde hair gives her an innocent look. She has a child like and doll like appearance with her large eyes and larger forehead. This gives a feeling of her being stuck in her past

Evanna Lynch – again her blonde hair gives her an innocent look. Her pale skin makes her seem like she doesn’t go out side as she is trapped inside. She has very round eyes, giving her a doll-like appearance. In the film ‘Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix’ she plays a girl who is aged around 15. Which is the age of our girl in our film. She is known to be a strange girl in the Harry potter films.
